Keane Wonder Mine & Mill
In December 1903, Jack Keane discovered a huge ledge of gold at the base of the Funeral Mountains and named his claim the Keane Wonder Mine. Within six months, more than 500 prospectors were working the area. The mill was completed in October 1907. The mine closed in August 1912. Several mining revivals took place subsequently, notably from 1914-1916, and in 1935 when the tailings were reworked with cyanide. In 1937, the stamps were removed. In 1940, the tramway was repaired and a new mill was constructed (completed in 1942). Everything except for the tramway has been moved to another location since.
The Keane Wonder Mine & Mill site is well indicated by signs posted in Death Valley. From CA-190, take the Beatty cutoff and drive for about 9 km to a dirt road on the right. Follow this road all the way to the site.
