Originally named Marshall (after James Marshall, the discoverer of gold in California) in 1849, the town was renamed Uniontown in 1850, then finally Lotus when the post office was established. In the midst of the gold rush, Lotus had a population of around 2000.

Lotus is in El Dorado County about about 2 km north of Coloma.
