Smartville (or Smartsville) is a mining town dating from the 1850's and is named after a certain Mr. Smart who established the first building in town, a hotel built in 1856. Hard-rock mining took place in the surrounding hills, as well as hydraulic mining in the 1860's and 1870's. The Catholic church is the town's most prominent building.

The Catholic church from 1861, burned and replaced in 1870.
