Blairton
In 1866, the Cobourg, Peterborough, and Marmora Railroad was completed giving easy access to the iron mines in the Crowe Lake area. The town of Blairton was laid out to house miners and soon had a population of 500. About ten years later, spring ice floes on Rice Lake destroyed the railway trestle and water began to seep into the mines. The population dropped to 100 and, despite the construction of a new railroad in 1884, the mines were never reopened. In 1906, there were 25 residents in town.
At present, there are only a few original buildings left in Blairton, but they include an impressive two-storey company house. A few miner's houses are on the main street and there are foundations of other buildings on the other side of the street.
Blairton is located 2 km north of Hwy 7 along Blairton Road (about 7 km west of Marmora).
